Synthetic data has been posed as a panacea for everything from data privacy and sparsity to disproportionate data representation. In 2023, we will see broader use of data generation services from commercial vendors and a flurry of new entrants into the space. This will include increased availability of generated data sets from companies looking to monetize protected data like health care patient records or privileged data assets like intellectual property. Expect turbulence as efforts to keep synthetic data sets from inadvertently falling prey to the same pitfalls of their “natural” counterparts become apparent. Discussion regarding qualified standards and benchmarks will progress but likely not yet be codified.
