At SAS, a world-class workplace is an important part of our employee experience, and our Cary Headquarters is no exception. From awe-inspiring buildings to incredible sculptures, every element is designed to delight and inspire.

Ready for a tour through photos? Let's start at the beginning.

In the early days, our first home was on Hillsborough Street, across the street from North Carolina State University, where SAS was born out of a project to analyze agricultural research. By 1980, we outgrew the capacity of the Hillsborough Street office and purchased the land in Cary where our current campus sprawls across a mix of 900 acres.

As you travel through campus, you’ll notice that every element of SAS’ design, from the beautiful landscaping to the awe-inspiring art, is based on fostering innovation and creativity. Why? Our CEO, Jim Goodnight, believes that “If you treat people like they make a difference, they will make a difference.” And that, they do.

Our headquarters campus is home to over 24 buildings, nine of which are LEED certified for sustainable construction. Our newest building, Building A, was constructed in 2019. With nine floors and 999 offices, it’s home to a full-service Café and even a bakery! Fun fact – Building A is the tallest building in Cary and overlooks SAS’ solar farms. From the top floor, you can see the Raleigh skyline and our solar farms.

Speaking of our Solar Farms... they are a combined 2.2 megawatts in capacity and generate 3.6 million kilowatt hours of clean renewable energy each year, enough to power 200+ mid-size homes.

And we can’t forget the sheep who keep the grass around the panels clean and neat! Read more about our grass-munching colleagues here.

Next door, you’ll find Building C. Home to our Executive Briefing Center, it’s a sight to behold. Home to almost 700 offices and two auditoriums, this building is as functional as it is beautiful.

Building C also houses much of Dr. Goodnight’s mineral collection, which sparkles and shines throughout the building - inspiring employees, customers and guests alike.

It’s also where you’ll find a lunchtime fan-favorite: SAS sushi! If this building looks familiar, it may be because you’ve seen the movie Iron Man 3. Building C made a cameo in the film as Stark Headquarters – you can read all about it.

Down the road, Building R hosts many of our technical Research and Development folks. It’s our largest building, and it boasts a unique, light-filled atrium that bears resemblance to the Grand Ole Opry Hotel in Tennessee. This building is also home to our SAS Library, which houses a collection of 10,000 books that’s networked with several local universities.

There’s enough computer cabling in Building R to stretch from Cary to Arlington, Virginia!

Chess, anyone? You’ll find this larger-than-life set in the backyard of Building R! It makes for the perfect mid-day break or lunchtime entertainment.

Down the road, you’ll find our Recreation and Fitness Center, where over 1,500 fitness classes are taught each year. Here, you’ll find employees enjoying exercise equipment, free weights, basketball, volleyball, three racquetball courts, and more! Outdoors, you’ll find soccer fields, a softball field, tennis courts, a jogging track and a biking trail.

If it’s a fair-weather day at SAS Headquarters, you can be sure there will be intramural soccer teams playing at lunch! Our soccer fields are a small part of the 28 acres dedicated to the physical fitness of employees, not including the jogging trails.

Speaking of jogging trails… they’re a great place for a jog or a walk to clear your head. And that sculpture? It’s one of 32 monumental sculptures in SAS’ outdoor collection, and employees have affectionately nicknamed this one “Big Blue”!

...and these pictures are just the tip of the iceberg. Soooo many other beautiful buildings, artwork, and landscapes. I will never take for granted the years I've spent working at SAS!

  2. Looking at these photos, I'm so grateful to be working for SAS in the Cary office. There are many more cafes, walking trails, lake views, lovely art pieces, and more.
