2026 marks 50 years of SAS. Undoubtedly, our software has changed the world, but there’s something else that’s been revolutionary: our workplace culture. A key part of that in Cary, NC, is our headquarters. To celebrate our anniversary, we took a trip around campus, visiting some familiar locations with some old photos.

The first home base for SAS was on Hillsborough Street, across from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. By 1980, SAS outgrew the office and purchased the land in Cary, where our current campus sprawls across 900 acres. From awe-inspiring buildings to incredible sculptures, every element is designed to delight and inspire, but this sign on Harrison Ave. welcomes you before you even cross the gates.

Above, you’ll recognize our beloved Recreation and Fitness Center (RFC), where our instructors have been teaching classes for over 40 years (they celebrated their 40th anniversary just last year). Here, you’ll find exercise equipment, free weights, basketball, volleyball, three racquetball courts and more.

Our headquarters campus is home to over 24 buildings, nine of which are LEED certified for sustainable construction. Building A was constructed in 2019. With nine floors and 999 offices, it’s home to a full-service Café and even a bakery. Even though the technology sitting on office desks has changed, the commitment to a world-class workplace hasn’t.

There are 32 sculptures representing 26 artists at SAS HQ. Point Traveling Through Space at an Erratic Speed by artist Robert Mangol is found out front of Building S just across from Building R. It is one of three red sculptures in the outdoor collection and must be touched up regularly because the color fades in the sunlight.

Building R has seen many changes through the years. Does anyone remember the palm trees? (I hear you were not allowed to eat those bananas.) It’s our largest building and it boasts this unique, light-filled atrium. To this day, it hosts the backbone of SAS: our R&D folks.

Here, Dr. Goodnight poses out back of Building R at the giant chessboard. These memories remind us of the foundation we stand on here at SAS. Help us celebrate 50 years of SAS around the world! Share your photos and memories, whether campus traditions, global office views and even WFH spaces.
