I love a good viral food hack (especially one that actually works!). While I’ve had plenty fails, the #trendingtortillahack did not disappoint.
The trending tortilla hack is a spin on traditional quesadillas, creating multiple layers of fillings instead of just one. The way it’s folded in on itself creates a pocket that makes it easier to eat with less spillage. And the best part – it’s more of a template than an actual recipe so you can truly make it your own.

There are 4 basic steps to creating a folded tortilla sandwich:
1. Cut it.
Using a sharp knife, make a slit from the center of the tortilla down to the bottom edge. This will allow you to fold it into quadrants.
2. Fill it.
Pick four ingredients that pair well together, placing one in each quadrant. To ensure you don’t overfill the tortilla and end up with an ooey gooey mess, only use 2-4 tablespoons of each filling (this will vary depending on the size of your tortilla).
3. Fold it.
Start by folding the bottom right quadrant upwards.
Repeat in a counterclockwise motion with the other quadrants until you’ve created a tortilla sandwich or pocket.
4. Heat it. (optional)
If you’d like to heat the ingredients and/or crisp up the outside, place the tortilla sandwich into a skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes on each side or until it becomes golden brown. If you’d like it extra crispy, add a little butter to the pan. (This can also be done in a sandwich press.)
Folding in Healthy Ingredients
Like I mentioned earlier, this hack is more of a template than a recipe. Filling combinations are truly endless. They can be savory or sweet. You can mix and match depending on what you have on hand. And they’re a great way to use up random leftovers from fridge!
While the fillings are endless, there are two basic elements needed to create a folded tortilla sandwich:
- The Wrap: Traditionally, flour tortillas are used. However, you could also use corn, gluten-free, vegan or low-carb wraps – as long as it can be folded, then it should work fine. You could also try non-traditional options like nori sheets, rice paper wraps or crepes.
- The Fillings: Choose fillings that pair well together. The size of your wrap will determine how much filling it can handle, but in general 2-4 tablespoons per quadrant works well.
Pro Tip: If heating, put fresh veggies in one of the inner layers with cheeses, sauces, spreads, and proteins on the outside so the veggies won’t wilt too much, and the cheese can melt easier.
