30 Years of Helping SAS Employees Stay Healthy

rfc-mark-anniversary30-cIt all started in 1985.  December 2nd as a matter of fact.  Four full time staff members shared one office and the responsibility for keeping SAS employees fit and healthy.  It has always been a part of the SAS culture to look out for employee’s health and well-being.  And as SAS grew, so did the Recreation and Fitness Center (RFC), not only expanding square footage but also staff size and program offerings.

“It’s been exciting to see where we started and where we are now and to have been a part of it from the beginning”, says Director of Recreation and Employee Services, Jack Poll. The Recreation and Fitness Center opened with just one building, building G (20,000+ square feet) and has expanded into a complex of 4 buildings (over 66,000 square feet) and extensive outdoor facilities.  The outdoor facilities include two multipurpose fields, tennis courts, a softball field, outdoor TRX, Frisbee golf course, a meditation garden and more.

rfc-rainbowDany Losh, Recreation and Fitness Center Manager overseeing Sports, Recreation and Leisure, Discounts and On-site services says, “little did I know when I
was first hired to lead personal training sessions, aerobic classes and recreational programming, that I would be overseeing such a diverse and large program area.  Programs now include a hair salon, massage therapy, discounts to multiple events in the area, A to Z sports programming, and a variety of recreational events including team building, beer tasting, giant fall festival programs (that accommodate 500 employees and their family members) and so much more.” Dany has been with the RFC for over 25 years.

I’ve worked in other corporate fitness facilities, commercial gyms and university facilities and I believe the quality of our programs are second to none.We are always making sure we keep up with industry standards and are often ahead of the current trends. Our trainers and instructors are certified and the entire staff goes through regular continuing education on a yearly basis to keep up with new research and the latest fitness craze. Among the multitude of fitness and wellness offerings are classes in step, cycle, TRX, a wide range of yoga classes and workshops, series in relaxation, classes in mindfulness based stress reduction, smoking cessation, lunchtime seminars and more!

We’re celebrating the Recreation and Fitness Center’s 30th anniversary today, Wednesday, December 2 with a trip down memory lane in the form of a slide show featuring past events and participants and sweet treats.  RFC staff are dusting off their 80s attire, pulling out the 80s music, and honoring 30 years with 30s and or 1980s themed classes.  Here’s a snapshot of the last 30 years:

While we celebrate the past, we’re also already looking forward to future program offerings that will keep things fresh and exciting for SAS employees and their families.

Happy 30th birthday!  Here’s to many more!
