SAS inventors recently gathered to celebrate the 2023 patent honorees. The dinner event marked 20 years of the annual celebration and featured photos and memories from years past.

SAS Senior Principal Patent Counsel Dwight Thompson offered opening remarks at The Umstead Hotel banquet in Cary, which he said was designed to honor “unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries to create groundbreaking and valuable solutions.”

Before naming individual recipients, Thompson took a few moments to recognize key members involved in the process, including the Patent Committee and Legal team. He also gave a special nod to first time recipients’ new identity: “As of tonight, you are an inventor.”

SAS Chief Technology Officer Bryan Harris followed, congratulating inventors and noting the additional time and effort required beyond normal daily work to earn a patent. “The [patent]team offers incredible support, but it’s work, and it takes collaboration,” he said. Harris also noted the sacrifices spouses and loved ones make to support the achievement, and he initiated a round of applause for that group in the room.

“You’ll spend about 100,000 hours working over your lifetime,” Harris said. “To be able to have a moment to share with your loved one here — let them see you and recognize your work in front of your peers is an incredible thing.” He said the investment in a special celebration of SAS inventors each year is unique in the market and thanked CEO Jim Goodnight and JMP founder and Chair John Sall.

Earning a patent, Harris said, begins with belief and involves creativity, determination and collaboration. “But it’s also important to recognize how we treat each other along the way,” he said. “There’s not a better place to work, in my opinion, than at SAS. I think this place is amazing and I think what you all are doing is amazing.”

Be inspired by the patents and recipients shown below, many of whom were in Cary on April 29. Their efforts bring SAS’ patent total to 829. The list includes eight inventors who were awarded five patents each in 2023.
