Favorite Things about the SAS 9.2 EBI and BI Installations

4

After completing several SAS 9.2 BI and EBI installations, I must profess my love for the improvements:

  • greener! - cds shipped by customer request only, default is Electronic Download
  • faster!
  • less manual steps
  • fewer system user accounts
  • many more sample plans available for more 'standard' installs
  • significant reduction in post-install configuration steps
  • quickstart.pdf - points out steps to complete process
  • ordersummary.html - provides a list of third party products required

A Quick Note:
Using the sample plans means you really should accept all the products available to the install. Unselecting a 'client' product means that the server components of that product (read Enterprise Guide 4.2) are not configured.

  1. Chris, Actually after discussions with SAS Technical Support I then needed to rerun the Configuration Wizard with the 'Enterprise Guide, two machine' plan (selecting 'Server') to include the EG Server data in the EBI and BI installations that used the standard plans. Tech Support mentioned they were fixing the standard EBI/BI plans to include this metadata in a later shipment.

  2. Alan, A full bi server installation on a single machine (including the client applications) should be do-able in less than a day. When you add factors such as multiple machines, migrations from prior 9.1.3 installs, or 'non standard' machine configurations (such as Windows folders being locked down by default), the time could increase by several days.

  3. Angela,Can you give me a sense for the amount of time it takes to install on a PC acting as both the client and the server? Assume I have all of the material and simply need it for testing and to demo. Thanks,Alan

  4. The "server components" for Enterprise Guide include something called "Enterprise Guide Server Data". This is metadata that enables an admin to configure user roles with specific capabilities in the software. For example, if you want to control who can JOIN tables in the EG query builder, you can now configure that in SAS Management Console.Chris@SAS
