Data Data Everywhere

Think about all of the data now out there, from old transaction systems to new networking sites, there is an amazing amount for analysts to sink their teeth into. Some interesting sources that I have heard of over the past year include:

  • Immediate web traffic analytics which then derive suggestions - such as Facebook's Beacon application that was too good. Any organization can emulate this capability, check out Speed-Trap, a great example of monitoring this on your site.
  • Network traffic within the organization, including websites/emails/IMs/remote desktop/etc. eTelemetry (a Zencos Partner) has the facilities to retrieve this information and link to people rather than meaningless (at least to execs) IP addresses.
  • Free wireless networking allows even the smallest coffee shop, hotel or city the mechanism to understand their customers via internet traffic. Meraki has a toolbar to offer real-time opportunities to users based on their web usage. The wireless host organization can immediate provide special offers, announcements or any other type of communication, enhancing the relationship with the wireless customer.
  • Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social networking sites provide individuals a free & easy mechanism to praise or roast an organization. Companies will need to mine this data and proactively address customers comments to maintain 'cred' with the next generation. Check out Don Tapscott's books and website at http://www.ngenera.com/.
