My original attempt to pen an update has been overtaken by a Teradata press release on 8/10/2018 unveiling Vantage, which (as far as I can see) is a formal rebranding of what was previously called Teradata Analytics Platform. I confess it’s somewhat disconcerting (as an analytics vendor) reading a press release that starts with the tagline “Stop Buying Analytics” but indeed, technology should never be the focus – rather it’s about delivering business benefit, something we can all agree on. And Teradata has a new logo too!
The observant of you may spot that (in the midst of a myriad of open-source logos) SAS is the only commercial vendor shown in the Vantage landscape. That’s a reflection of the 10+ year Alliance Partnership between SAS & Teradata that has delivered a multiple examples of integration of which I’ve spoken in previous posts.
Here are the some of the key integration achievements that have been delivered this year
- Support for Cloud & Database Variants: A number of RDBMS vendors, including Teradata, have variants – either because they run in cloud or other non-traditional environments. SAS has extended SAS/ACCESS and SAS In-Database Technologies support to selected cloud and database variants of Teradata, including on IntelliCloud, Amazon Web Services & Microsoft Azure and VMware. See here for more details.
- The Teradata Listener connector for SAS Event Stream Processing (ESP) sends data from ESP to the Teradata Listener application. Teradata Listener ingests high-volume, real-time data streams and persists the data from those streams to Teradata, Aster, or Hadoop.
- SAS Quality Analytics Suite with Teradata includes three quality analysis solutions with pre-built data quality calculations and distributions, patented early-warning algorithms, out-of-the-box analyses, and advanced data modelling that is optimised for Teradata:
- SAS Field Quality Analytics: Detect emerging issues and root causes within warranty, call centre and other field data sources.
- SAS Asset Performance Analytics: Boost uptime, performance and productivity by harnessing machine-to-machine and sensor data.
- SAS Production Quality Analytics: Improve quality and production performance by integrating data from across the manufacturing process and supply chain.
It’s clear that Teradata’s focus is to deliver a platform for analytics and even their traditional Partners event held in mid-October has been rebranded to Analytics Universe. We’re not alone (in the IT business) in walking a fine line between competition and partnership so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
