Hiya,
Glad you like my post! I need to point out that the CD analogy is from Andy Mulholland over at Capgemini's global CTO blog (http://www.capgemini.com/ctoblog/2009/08/have_we_really_understood_what.php). I'd also like to emhpasize your point that the externally focused approch I'm suggesting does not replace a conventional BI or EPM strategy. If fact, it relies on it. You need an understanding of where you've been to contextualize what you're seeing out in the environment. The key tactical take away is to integrate external data into you BI strategy, rather than just relying on internally generated information. John Boyd has be the best take on this: our challenge is one of data analysis and synthesis. Or as he more pithily put it, the challenge of creating snowmobiles http://www.lesc.net/node/105 r. PEG I think the integration of external data into ones general BI reporting is essential for a framework of reference. Specifically, say I'm selling furniture and my sales are basically flat for the current year, but my competition's is down 10%, then in actuality I'm having a descent year and probably gaining market share over my competitors.
