Statistics: The language of science

A recent KD Nuggets poll caught my attention. It asked respondents to complete a sentence as follows: “With the trend towards Big Data and Data-driven Machine Learning methods Statistics will become less important Statistics importance will not change Statistics will become more important, as the foundation of Data Science Not

The well-appointed analytic workbench

What do I mean by “analytic workbench?” Basically, the compute-resource environment with which data analysis takes place. How would you describe some of the analytic workbenches in your organization? Not everyone is a power analyst, so not everyone requires power tools. But all of us deal with data at some

JMP data modeling challenge launched by ENBIS

ENBIS, the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics, has launched the next JMP Challenge sponsored by JMP. You have until June 15 to submit your solution showing how to turn data into practical value. The ENBIS Challenge by JMP is a yearly activity aimed at promoting sound practices of

Is your data too precise?

There is usually a desire to have the most precise measurement of any measurement. In theory, that is good, but for the purposes of data analysis, more precision isn't always better.   It is usually best to examine any continuous variable and determine a reasonable precision for the recorded values.

Partitioning a quadratic in JMP

At a recent Building Better Models seminar, someone asked me, “If you have a factor that has a curved relationship with a response, can a decision tree model be used to model that relationship?” To show that this is indeed possible, I created a simple simulated data set with 200

Russ Wolfinger elected 2012 AAAS Fellow

Congratulations to Russ Wolfinger, PhD, who was elected a 2012 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science! Wolfinger was chosen for his "path-breaking statistical software used to analyze correlated data, promotion of statistical reasoning in science, and leadership in analysis of gene expression data," the AAAS said.

Forest Plot Add-In for JMP 10

A forest plot (Figure 1) is a convenient way to graphically display several confidence or credible intervals and is often used in meta-analysis. Here, the x-axis represents the treatment effect between two interventions while the y-axis refers to the individual studies from which the intervals are obtained, or to various consensus intervals derived

Sam Gardner on building better statistical models in Europe

“All models are wrong, but some are useful,” George Box once stated. Sam Gardner will speak to European audiences next week about building better -- and useful -- statistical models, as part of the JMP Explorers seminar series. It is the second round for this seminar in Europe this year. There

Observations from 1st Predictive Analytics World in Chicago

Analysts of all stripes attended Chicago’s first Predictive Analytics World (PAW), where JMP was a sponsor. We talked to attendees about design of experiments, Six Sigma, graphics and spatial analysis, data visualization and other topics in addition to predictive analytics. For me, the highlights of PAW were many: Matt Flynn
