The hottest trends in analytics

Leading up to the Analytics 2012 Conference, we’re going to explore the latest trends in analytics.

For this, we reached out to several of our speakers and sponsors to get their take on what’s catching fire. The one we found on almost everyone’s list -- Big Data.

“The hottest trend is definitely dealing with Big Data,” said Steve VanWieren, Ultimate Software. “The tools and capabilities that are becoming more readily available are changing the way people who execute analytics are thinking.”

Dudley Gwaltney with SunTrust Bank believes Big Data is the big buzz word right now, but there’s something else just as hot.

“I think another hot trend is using models to better manage consumer interactions. Twenty years ago, when a consumer wanted to interact with a bank, retailer, utility, etc, they either went in person or called. Through web sites and mobile apps, the consumer can manage their relationship with a company without speaking directly with a person.  Models allow us to optimize those “non-talking” conversations with our clients.”

Manual Sanchez with BBVA Bancomer envisions a big future in Social Media Analytics.

“It is not only about what your customers and market segment are telling you; this is about what they say when they feel free to say anything to anyone and even more, it is about getting the messages that they give without noticing. I see organizations having formal and well organized teams for Opinion and Relationship Analytics as part of the customer knowledge core activities in the next years.”

Bill Franks with Teradata says there’s a focus on the role of the Data Scientist.

“The upside of this label is that it is bringing positive attention to the world of analytics. The downside is that what is getting lost in the hype is the fact that really good analytic professionals have always been focused on the processes currently being associated with data scientists, albeit with sometimes different toolsets and data. What this means is that organizations who have already embraced analytics likely already have on staff some very talented people who can fill the role of data scientist for them.”

But that’s just the beginning. What do you think is trending right now in analytics? Let’s get the conversation started by leaving your comments below. For a deeper discussion, join these speakers and more at the Analytics 2012 Conference on Oct 8-9 in Las Vegas.
