The value of SAS certifications

Updated Nov. 18, 2020

The demand for data skills has been growing at a rapid rate and will continue to progress for years to come. According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), Data and AI will experience the highest annual growth rate for job opportunities, at 41%. It’s no surprise that the need for these skills is greater than the ability to fulfill the requirements, hence the term “skills gap” that continues to be a hot topic throughout the job market.

How did we get here? Believe it or not, an article from the WEF estimates that by 2025, 463 exabytes of data will be created each day globally. From the amount of data that people are creating each day, there’s no question that organizations need talented individuals to digest this data, discover patterns and make informed decisions. With the amount of demand in this space, it’s important to not only validate your capabilities, but differentiate yourself. Achieving a certification will set you apart and give you the power to succeed. The following are 10 reasons to get a SAS certification.

SAS skills are in high demand

The proof is in the data. An analysis performed by jobsite Indeed.com in the first quarter of 2020 demonstrated that SAS Programming skills within job postings increased 31%. The overall growth in SAS programming skills during a downward trend in national hiring is reassurance that the need for SAS skills isn’t going anywhere.

Another tech recruitment site, Dice.com, used Burning Glass to analyze jobs that demand SAS skills, so if your unsure what career path your hard-earned skills can take you make sure to check it out. They’re predicting a 4.4% growth in SAS skills over the next 10 years.

Get granular or stay general

The SAS certification program spans a wide range of topic areas. From Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to Base Programming, you’ll be able to find the certification that is just right for you. Check out more details on the SAS Global Certification program. You can get started with specialist-level credentials and work your way towards a professional-level status. Or if you want the coveted title of SAS Certified Data Scientist, join the SAS Academy of Data Science.

Improve your employment opportunities

No certification can guarantee that you will get a job, however it could open the door to new job opportunities. Showing a potential employer that you have put in the time, effort, and dedication to earn a SAS credential can give you an advantage in the hiring process. Nearly 50% of certification holders deemed certifications helped them find a new job, enter a new career field and increased their number of job interviews, according to Pearson Vue’s “Value of IT Certification” report.

Do you want to climb the career ladder?

Earning a SAS credential helps demonstrate that you are serious about enhancing and improving your skill set and are willing to invest in your personal growth. A win-win for you and your employer. In a recent survey of Coursera learners who completed SAS training, 84% of certification holders reported that achieving a SAS credential helped them advance their career, excel in their position and do their job more effectively.

Demonstrate your true SAS skills and understanding

The Base and Advanced Programming exams are now performance-based, meaning you write and execute actual SAS code while you are in the exam. It’s as real-world as it gets and a great way to demonstrate what you really know!

Digital bragging rights

Upon passing your certification, you receive recognition with an online digital badge that provides secure, electronic verification of your achievement. Use this badge on your LinkedIn profile, boast to family and friends across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or wherever you want your digital footprint to take you!

Inconvenienced by the hassle of getting to a Pearson VUE location?

We get it – it’s hard to carve out the time and get there to take a test. Access to SAS exams is easier than ever with the availability of OnVUE remote proctoring, which allows you to take any SAS exam from your home or office if you meet the technical requirements. Each OnVUE session is monitored in real-time over your internet connection and web cam.

Receive ongoing support and be a part of a community

Join like-minded individuals who strive for the same success as you. There are SAS Certification Communities, LinkedIn User Groups, plus local and regional user groups that you can also join. The comradery around being a SAS user is an extra perk that we all join forces on!

Get started with free certification prep materials

There’s no need to feel like you’re on your own throughout the certification journey. There’s plenty of free training resources, including defined training paths, webinars, tutorials and sample questions that will make preparing for a certification exam more accessible and less stressful. There are free practice exams for some of the most popular exams, so you can test your knowledge before you book your exam spot, too.

Allow employers to easily discover you

SAS certified individuals can be listed in the Directory of SAS Certified Professionals which can be accessed by employers to validate your credentials.

65% of certified individuals reported realizing the first benefit of getting certified within 3-4 months.

Deciding to embark on the road to certification isn’t always the quickest and easiest decision to make, but it pays off in the end. Personal accomplishments, career growth, new opportunities – adding a SAS certification to your belt offers many benefits.

If it comes down to budget, we offer additional ways to make it more cost efficient. Check out the certification training packages which groups together training and resources to make the experience more affordable. And don’t forget students and faculty can take certification exams for only $75 USD. Simply register for an academic discount voucher in the appropriate learning portal: SAS Skill Builder for Students or SAS Educator Portal. These portals require an academic email address to join.

  6. Hi there,
I am a commerce graduate, and working as program consultant. I am basically working in a PMO office, procurement shared services. I want to get into supply chain management, however, not sure if SAS certification is something that I can think of. I have no knowledge of programming. I am quite confused as to how do I get into supply chain management.

    • SAS is used across many industries and job roles, including Supply Chain Management. Which SAS certification is right for you depends on what skills a particular company is looking for. If an employer is looking for analytical skills, the SAS Certified Predictive Modeler or the SAS Certified Statistical Business Analyst credential may be most appropriate. If an employer is looking for SAS programming skills, the best place to start is the SAS Certified Base Programmer. Take a look at all the available SAS credentials at: support.sas.com/certify. Good luck

    • From a certification perspective, the Base Programmer for SAS 9 and the Clinical Trials Programming Using SAS 9 credentials are common in the Health Care areas. Here is the link to the SAS Certification website where you can view more information about these certifications and the recommended training courses. http://support.sas.com/certify/

      Hi Sumit,

SAS Institute does not provide career counseling or job placement services. Generally, we recommend that you review job opportunities in your geographic area of interest on job sites like Monster.com or icrunchdata.com to see what kind of skills are needed in your industry of choice.

Another way to investigate your area of possible interest is to review success stories for companies or industries of interest on the SAS web site (http://www.sas.com/success/). You can review the success stories by country, solution or technology.

Good luck with your job search!
      -Michele

If you've received certifications and are not receiving calls on your resume- the issue is you need a better focused resume.
If you are getting calls on your resume but are not getting interviews or you are getting interviews but not job offers-you need interview coaching.
There are many companies that provide these services that you can find on the internet with a simple search for what you need. Resume help, Interview coaching, or Career Coaching or All of them. Costs for these services vary widely.
A company I highly recommend is CareerIQ. Karen over there has helped hundreds of people position themselves for their careers and for the next position they wanted.
They have worked with clients from High school Students, recent college grads, career changers, return to work moms to V.P. and CFO .
Disclaimer: I have been a client and done some data work with them. http://careeriq.org

I recommend you visit their website and contact them for assistance.

  69. I would like to become SAS certified but I am wondering if their are courses that emphasize biostatistics. Thanks.

  70. I have read that even as an experienced SAS programmer passing the excam is very very hard. No I have no SAS knowlage or programming experience od any kind. Will SAS Base Programming 1 e-learning course prep me enough to get SAS certified?

    • My suggestion is to first read 'The Little SAS Book' from cover to cover. Then buy the Base SAS Certification Guide, and work your way through that. Go through the e-learning in parallel. I felt that the big problem with the e-learning back a few years ago was that it was frustratingly slow, and difficult to navigate.
