New! Statistical Analysis for Business Using JMP: A Student’s Guide

5

Let’s face it. Not everybody has eaten, slept, and lived statistics since kindergarten.  Some folks have even gone through their undergraduate years without so much as opening a statistics book. What do they do when they get to, say, business school and find out about something called “business analytics”?

Well, I don’t know what they used to do, but I know what they can do now, thanks to SAS Press author Willbann Terpening. They can pick up a copy of his highly readable and entertaining book Statistical Analysis for Business Using JMP®: A Student’s Guide. In this book, Dr. Terpening, a professor at Gonzaga University’s School of Business Administration, leads the business student carefully and expertly through the statistics world, explaining the basics not only of statistics but of JMP as well, and how the latter can be used to create charts, graphs, plots, histograms, and all the once-obscure statistical outputs now made clear and understandable.

As part of his educational approach, Dr. Terpening has created a fictional business user of JMP, the Inland Northwest Credit Union. Through each chapter, the student can follow the employees of the INCU in their responses to one statistical challenge after another.  In one chapter, INCU’s Mary Snow in IT has to catalogue all the company’s personal computers. In another, Bob Reed in HR needs to prepare a report comparing INCU’s employees demographically to those of other similar area firms. In yet another, Marketing’s Betty Anderson wants to analyze a recent survey of customers. The case studies are interesting and entertaining, and the use of the INCU common thread ties them all together into a unified whole.

Students of business, whether in school or already in the business world, even those brand new to business analytics, will find Terpening’s book a welcome introduction to a valuable set of tools.

  2. I think this book will help me to learn morethings in statastics and simple methods for coding, this new book also to learn more new coding techniques.

  3. I'm currently taking an intensive 3 month course in SAS programming for the pharmaceutical industry. The course is also serving as my introduction to SAS, and I must say that I love unlocking the software's ability to extract truths from data. Although we're mainly concerned with the drug development process here, I am very interested in getting my hands on this book to learn more about SAS's applications outside of clinical research. I will be new to business analytics, but not statistics. Cant wait!

I think the book will help me to understand statistic and it's application with JMP as I'm working as a business analytic. I'm not a strong statistician so basic book with clear example will help.
