Holy batman, there are still bookmobiles

On this morning’s commute, I spotted the first bookmobile that I’ve seen in years. I don’t have children or any reason to actively look for bookmobiles—but was pleasantly surprised to see one. Besides reminding me of long summer days when school was out, the bookmobile was the only way to borrow books in my small town. And I loved it.

Obviously, our reading culture and options have changed a lot since I was a young reader (who traipsed uphill 3 miles to school each day through the snow. Right…). But what hasn’t changed is that many people LOVE to read.

Whether you’re reading a hard copy book or content on your phone, iPad, PC, or eReader—the actual reading experience hasn’t changed, in my opinion, beyond the technical differences. We still read to learn, to improve ourselves, to escape…If you’re like me, you’ve just expanded your options and read more than ever. While the actual bookmobile (sadly) may not be as accessible to some of us as adults, the publishing industry has tried to replicate the experience by coming to us.

How are you reading books? And do you have any bookmobile memories or sightings that you’d like to share?
