10 articles to read on Data Privacy Day

Businesswoman working from home with child on Data Privacy DayAs far as invented holidays go, Data Privacy Day (Jan. 28) ranks high in my opinion. While it will never beat National Pizza Day, it blows National Boss Day out of the water. (Who ever thought devoting an entire day to bosses and the bestowing of gifts was a good idea? No doubt, a boss – somebody on the receiving end of that deal.)

Data Privacy Day is an international effort that was created in Europe in 2006 and has been an official "holiday" in the United States since 2008. It's currently observed in 50 countries. While the day's purpose is to promote best practices, it's also a reminder that individuals are becoming increasingly aware of how their data is being handled and the rights they possess. The General Data Protection Regulation and the California Consumer Protection Act are just two examples of government action meeting the wishes of the people. And with survey results from SAS stating that 67% of Americans think the government should do more to protect data privacy, we can expect more action in the form of regulations soon.

As we recognize the importance of Data Privacy Day, I thought it would be fitting to compile a list of articles on the topic – some from SAS, and some from others that caught my interest. These articles range from practical “how-to’s” to what to expect if you're found in violation of certain laws. All consider data privacy a top priority for individuals and governments.

Without further ado, here are ten articles I recommend reading on Data Privacy Day.
