SAS Enterprise Guide - Vista-ready!

You've been asking for it, and now it's here. We have just released a revision to SAS Enterprise Guide 4.1 that supports Microsoft Vista.

We released SAS Enterprise Guide 4.1 originally in March 2006. Microsoft Vista was on the horizon then, but was not available to the general public until January 2007. Even then, SAS Enterprise Guide could run on Vista, but installing it was difficult. The new security model in Vista would prevent some of the installation routines from completing correctly. While it was possible to "hand-install" the application, SAS could not officially support this configuration.

We have fixed the installation issues and remastered the SAS Enterprise Guide media. As a bonus, the new release of SAS Enterprise Guide also includes all of the latest fixes (through hotfix 6). Any SAS software order that includes SAS Enterprise Guide 4.1, including the SAS Foundation/SAS Enterprise Guide DVD and many SAS solutions, will benefit from this new revision.

Now that we have support for Vista in SAS Enterprise Guide 4.1, this question has bubbled up to the most frequently asked: "Can I use SAS Enterprise Guide 4.1 with my new SAS 9.2?" The answer is Yes. You can use SAS Enterprise Guide 4.1 with SAS 9.

This is perfect timing. How do we get the revision? Is it something I have to request via my Partner rep or will it be provided as a download on the support site?

Alan, you will need to get new versions of the Enterprise Guide media from your SAS representative. There is not a downloadable version of this software update.

Hi Chris,

We have attempted to install SAS EG on Vista and encountered some problems with "ghosting" or similar to a double-vision effect on some of our text (especially text next to check boxes). Has this ever been noted before? I'm wondering if the latest revision will address this issue. Anything you could provide would be appreciated.

Mike,

I know what you mean. There were some cases where the groupbox borders were drawn through the text of checkboxes. It happens in several of the tasks.

We did fix this in a previous hotfix. This new distribution of Enterprise Guide 4.1 includes all previous hotfixes, so this issue should be addressed.

Hi Chris:
I already installed SAS Foundation on Vista using Compatibility Wizard and I will install EG 4.1 with the new media, is it necessary to run the EG installation using compatibility wizard?

No, you should be able to install it as is, without the compatibility mode.

Before installing EG 4.1 on Vista I installed EG 4.1 with my new media on my Xp (SP2) and when I browse the Help Menu I found this new version is SAS Enterprise Guide 4.1 (4.1.0.1000). Is this the appropriate version to install on Vista?

Alan, no it does not apply to the SAS Learning Edition. There are no plans currently to update the SAS Learning Edition for Vista.

However, we do have a Vista-compatible version of SAS Enterprise Guide for use in the academic environment. It's part of SAS OnDemand for Academics, which you can learn about at:

Hi Chris,

I'm really interested in buying the SAS Learning Edition coz I'm self-studying SAS. However, I'm using Vista. There's a comment I've read from Amazon that it works on Vista Business with a bit of tweaking to do it. Do you think it would work also on Vista Home?

If you managed to get it working on Vista Business, I see no reason why it wouldn't work on Vista Home. Of course, we did not test/certify LE 4.1 on any version of Vista. You'll probably have better luck with 32-bit Vista than with 64-bit Vista.

In Vista:
- Control Panel->System and Maintenance
- Under Welcome Center, select "Find which version of Windows you are using"
- From there, you will need to click the "Show more details" button to see which system type you are running with.

Hey Chris, I need SAS learners edition for a class but I have Vista 64-bit on my laptop so I am interested in the OnDemand. Do you think that the OnDemand is comparable to the LE, also whats the difference between Enterprise Guide, Enterprise Miner, or JMP?

Since Enterprise Guide 4.1 already support Vista, can I assume it also can run on Windows XP 64 Bit OS if SAS 9.2 install in the same PC.

SAS Enterprise Guide runs on x64 as a 32-bit application. As such, it does not automatically connect to a local 64-bit SAS. The reason, briefly, is that Enterprise Guide relies on the Windows registry to tell it where the SAS instance is, and 32-bit apps and 64-bit apps do not share the same registry on 64-bit versions of Windows.

So the short answer is no, you probably won't be able to run SAS Enterprise Guide 4.1 with SAS 9.2 on a 64-bit box.

Hi Chris,
Is this reply from 6/2008 still a true statement. I am thinking of getting a new PC to run Vista/64 bit. I currently have EG 4.1 and run my code on an AIX server using 9.2.

Our contract dept (here in France) systematically tells our EG customers, running on Vista, to re-install EG using a new media that they sent (SE37 or +) and to apply the latest hotfix 41EG07. I didn't see anywhere that hotfix 7 is absolutely necessary (always recommanded of course). So what's the truth ?

The new "refreshed" version of Enterprise Guide that we released for Vista support includes all hotfixes up through hotfix 6. Since then we have released a 7th hotfix with a few fixes, and we are preparing an 8th. To ensure you have the latest production version of the software, it's a good idea to have the current hotfix level installed.
