Hi Alison,
I like the list you created. It is refreshing to think about BI not in the context of processes and functions, but in term of analytics: tangible assets delivered to the business for them to use. From that perspective, I wonder what the '*Optimization*'-analytic does represent (I'm still looking for the 'Optimize'-button on many of my reports ;-)) From the same perspective, I think you should mention dashboards/cockpits/scorecards in your list. They do represent imho a different type of analytics (at least scorecards). Kind regards, Freddy Holwerda Welcome, Freddy. Thanks for the comment. I've been lumping dashboards and scorecard capabilities in with the Alerts category - but that might be problematic ... for a number of reasons.
My basic understanding of optimization == a complex analytical process that considers all resource limitations and restrictions to determine the best course of action. Definitely not something you'll get from the press of a button. :} Optimization is my "favorite" of all analytics - so let me chime in here!
when i read of your desire to have an "optimize" magic button on your keypad - it reminded me of a slide i used in the talk i gave entitled "super models" . The slide was meant to be a joke - but it does get across the point that all too often we keep fuzzy ideas about dreams and optimal desires -- instead of applying time tested algorithms to help you really improve - which is what OPERATIONS RESEARCH consultants and the mathematicians can do for those eager to apply OPTIMIZATION to their real world challenges. anyway for my "funny" ice breaker -- my optimal software package -- would give me a pull down menu with these list of choices (and appropriate Cntr +keystrokes) Undo Stupid Changes Read Boss' Mind Adjust Boss Attitude Create Idea Insert Brilliance Extend Deadline Enhance Salary Find Better Client Restore Wasted Evenings Save Weekend to see a "screenshot" of this pull down menu you can watch my webcast now archived on the Better Management.com web site http://www.bettermanagement.com/seminars/seminar.aspx?l=13550 Enjoy! Hi Alison,
I also like your list and the reference about ROI. The ROI statement reminds me of the BI Maturity research that Wayne Eckerson of TDWI has completed. For ROI, it makes it very compelling to get past standard reports to move deep into the mature end. I also like dashboards as a separate element. Nice blog. Thanks for raising the conversation. Don Hi Alison, it looks like a nice concept... in fact I saw almost the exact same thing on a slide that Jim Davis presented at the SAS Forum in Sydney last week.
Thanks, David. And you're right! I got the idea for this article from the popular "peapod slide" that Davis and others are currently using in their talks.
