SAS publishing director Sean Gargan turns 25--in SAS years

The Director of SAS Publishing, Sean Gargan, will celebrate his 25th year at SAS on April 7th, 2011. Most of you have heard the accolades given to SAS for being the best place to work. Dr. Goodnight always says it’s the people at SAS that make it so great (he’s right). Sean is and always has been a great example of what a great boss should be. A few things I most admire about Sean are:

  • He respects me as a staff member and as an individual. He has earned my respect by being grounded and giving praise and constructive feedback in a positive way.
  • He trusts and stands by his staff which in turn, fosters loyalty and good teamwork.
  • He is a great communicator and takes the time to offer words of affirmation and support.
  • He is fair, sees challenges as opportunities, is a good coach, and constantly strives to improve.

A great boss has his eye on the bottom line, yet has the finesse required for balancing customer needs, employee needs, and company needs into a win-win-win solution. Measuring greatness isn’t an easy task. For me, it’s a pleasure to have Sean as my boss – and by my yard stick, he is a great boss!

If you see Sean this year in the Training and Bookstore booth at SAS Global Forum, it would be appropriate to say, ‘Happy 25th Anniversary, Sean’!
